2SLGBTQ+ Youth (13-29) Community Needs Assessment

Grande Prairie 2SLGBTQ+ Youth Needs Assessment

Through this 24-month project, funded by Women and Gender Equality Canada, Northreach Society will address the needs and barriers to equality faced by 2SLGBTQ+ youth, aged 13-29, in Grande Prairie, Alberta.

Until now, these young people haven’t had the chance to share their experiences through local research.

Why It Matters

2SLGBTQ+ youth face higher risks of mental health challenges, substance use, and homelessness. Yet there’s little to no local data to guide support in Grande Prairie.

This assessment will help identify the experiences and priorities of 2SLGBTQ+ youth so schools, agencies, and families can build a safer, more inclusive community together.

Our Approach:

Background
2SLGBTQ+ youth face unique challenges, but little is known about their experiences in Northern communities like Grande Prairie. This project explores local needs, barriers, and community-based solutions.

Objectives
The project identifies the needs and barriers of 2SLGBTQ+ youth (13–29) and creates a practical toolkit for community members and organizations.

Focus
We explore experiences by age group (13, 14–17, 18–24, 25–29), looking at what supports are missing, what works well, and what youth share throughout the assessment.

Participants & Stakeholders
Youth (13–29) are invited to participate. Community service and mental health providers help with recruitment, feedback, and developing solutions.

Timeline & Method
Over 24 months, the project includes interviews, focus groups, surveys, and data analysis, guided by grounded theory and Minority Stress Theory. Stakeholders help verify findings.

Toolkit & Sharing
Results will be shared through a report, infographic, toolkit, and youth-led digital storytelling. The free toolkit aims to foster a safer, more inclusive Grande Prairie for 2SLGBTQ+ youth.
